EyeCan
EyeCan: A Canadian Lens on Ophthalmology. In this series, we examine all aspects of what it means to be an Ophthalmologist in Canada; we speak with leaders in our field about their contributions and life journey; we explore new and emerging techniques and technologies in eye care. Through it all we hope to connect with our community and have those that listen understand the value of who we are and what we do for our patients. We’ll share our experiences as ophthalmologists today and tackle some of challenges we face as healthcare providers.

EyeCan Season 6, Episode 6 - Ophthalmic Supply in Canada: Challenges and Collaboration with guest Dr. David Plemel
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this timely episode of EyeCan, we tackle a growing challenge facing ophthalmologists across the country: drug and device shortages in Canada. Dr. David Plemel - COS Board Member and Drug & Device Shortages Liaison - joins us to unpack how and why shortages happen, why ophthalmology is disproportionately affected, and what makes Canada especially vulnerable.
From Tier 3 critical shortages to exceptional importation and the evolving role of Health Canada, this conversation explores the systems working behind the scenes to protect patient care. Dr. Plemel also shares how the Canadian Ophthalmological Society has shifted from passive observer to active advocate - publishing the Ophthalmic Essential Medication List and collaborating nationally to build resilience.
Essential listening for anyone who wants to understand the real-world impact of shortages - and the coordinated effort required to prevent small supply disruptions from becoming major threats to vision care.
With your host Dr. Hady Saheb.
